MARIA MARAKI


 

Maria Maraki is an Assistant Professor in Nutrition, Exercise Performance and Health at the Department of Physical Education & Sport Science of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens. She is a dietitian, with postgraduate studies at the Medical School of the University of Glasgow and doctoral studies at the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics of Harokopio University.  Her research carrier began in the field of exercise, diet and lipid metabolism, where she worked for more than ten years, organizing and running experimental human studies, as well as clinical trials. Over the last years, she has been working mostly on epidemiological and clinical studies, investigating the effect of the Mediterranean Diet, exercise and lifestyle on metabolism, weight status and the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases, with particular emphasis on movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease. Results of her studies have been published in highly impacted journals such as Neurology, Movement Disorders, Sports Medicine, Clinical Nutrition and Obesity. Her research has been recognized and distinguished in the field of Medicine and Nutrition, honoured with seven international awards and a scholarship from the State Scholarship Foundation. She has collaborated with several research groups and she is an advocate of interdisciplinarity in research, teaching and clinical practice. She has extensive teaching experience over more than ten years at the Harokopio University and the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, while she was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Nutrition at the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics of the Hellenic Mediterranean University from December 2021 to October 2023. In her free time, she voluntarily participates in medical missions in remote areas, or exercises in the sea and the mountains.
