Nickos Geladas is Professor of Exercise Physiology at the School of Physical Education and Sport Science in the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. He completed his BSc in Physical Education and Sport Sciences (1980), MSc in Kinesiology (1986) at the Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada, and his PhD in Kinesiology (1990) at the Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada. His general research interest lies on the mechanisms regulating human physiological function at rest and during exercise. His extensive research work has covered a wide aspect of topics relevant to human physiology and is oriented around performance under environmental extremes. (apnea, cold, heat, hypoxia, hyperbaria). His specific research focus is to investigate fatigue mechanisms during prolonged exercise. By using the twin model, Prof. Geladas has further conducted experiments to assess the effect of heritability on several components of physical fitness. He also has participated in a series of experimental studies investigating the nature of neuromuscular performance. His interest in applied sports physiology motivated him to lead as the principal investigator in field and laboratory studies examining the performance indices in athletes of several disciplines. He has published over 90 research articles and has served as a reviewer for international high-quality journals related to environmental and exercise physiology. His current citation index has been 4200, with an h-index of 27 and an i10-index of 48. Prof. Geladas has been teaching in several courses of the School of Physical Education and Sport Science at the National Kapodistrian University of Athens with the main ones being: Human Physiology, Exercise Physiology, Exercise Prescription for Patients with Chronic Diseases, Ergonomics, Free and Scuba Diving: Physiology and Safety, Applied Exercise Physiology. He is the course responsible and examiner of three master/doctoral courses related to environmental physiology. He has supervised the research work of 5 PhD candidates and 15 MSc students. Professor Geladas has served as university administrator in several roles, including Vice-chairman (current) of ELKE-EKPA (Special Account of Research Grants-National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), Dean of the School of Physical Education and Sport Science, Chairman of the Section of Sport Medicine and Exercise Biology and Director of the Exercise Physiology Laboratory (current).
